Oral Habit Elimination
Help your child break the habit - with compassion, not shame.
Thumb sucking, finger sucking, nail biting, and other oral habits are common in young children. But when these habits continue past age 4, they can affect dental development, facial growth, and speech. At BSPS, we help children stop oral habits using positive, supportive methods that work. No punishments. No shame. Just proven techniques and consistent support.
Who This Helps
Oral habit elimination therapy helps children (typically age 4+) with:
- Thumb or finger sucking continuing past age 4
- Nail biting affecting nail health or causing stress
- Lip biting or sucking
- Cheek chewing
- Prolonged pacifier use
- Other repetitive oral behaviors
Why Oral Habits Need Attention
When oral habits continue beyond toddlerhood, they can cause:
- Dental problems - open bite, overbite, teeth pushed out of alignment
- Palate changes - high, narrow palate from sustained pressure
- Speech issues - difficulty with certain sounds due to structural changes
- Skin damage - calluses, infections, or irritation
- Social concerns - teasing or embarrassment as children get older
- Orthodontic complications - more complex treatment needs
Signs It's Time for Intervention
- Your child is 4 years or older and still sucking their thumb/fingers
- You notice dental changes (gaps, overbite, open bite)
- The habit happens frequently throughout the day
- Your child seems unable to stop despite wanting to
- The habit is causing skin damage or calluses
- Your child is being teased or feels embarrassed
- Your dentist or orthodontist has recommended stopping
What to Expect
We start with understanding.
Every child and every habit is different. We'll learn when, why, and how often your child engages in the habit, and assess any oral or dental effects.
Therapy is positive and child-led.
We use age-appropriate strategies that help your child become aware of the habit and build motivation to change. We never use punishment, bitter nail polish as a first resort, or shame tactics.
Parents are essential partners.
You'll learn how to support your child at home without nagging or creating conflict. Consistency between therapy and home is key to success.
Most children succeed.
With the right approach and timing, most children can successfully eliminate oral habits within 3-6 months.
Our Approach
Oral habit elimination at BSPS includes:
- Awareness training - helping children recognize when they're doing the habit
- Replacement strategies - positive alternatives for comfort or boredom
- Motivation building - internal reasons to change, not external rewards
- Progress tracking - visual charts and celebration of success
- Parent coaching - how to respond without creating power struggles
Key principle: Children stop habits most successfully when THEY want to and have the tools to succeed.
Is Your Child Ready?
Readiness is important for success. Signs your child may be ready:
- Shows some awareness of the habit
- Expresses desire to stop (even if ambivalent)
- Can follow simple instructions
- Is generally age 4 or older (younger in some cases)
If your child isn't ready yet, we can help you prepare them and identify the right timing.
