What to Expect
Your step-by-step guide to getting started.
We know that reaching out for help with your child's speech, feeding, or development can feel like a big step. We want you to feel confident and prepared from the very beginning. This page walks you through exactly what happens from your first phone call through the start of therapy, so there are no surprises along the way.
Step 1: Schedule Your Evaluation
Getting started is simple. Call our office at (816) 228-8393 or register online through our patient portal. Our team will collect some basic information about your child, answer any questions you have, and find a time that works for your family.
If you are not sure whether your child needs an evaluation, that is okay. We are happy to talk through your concerns and help you decide.
Step 2: Before Your Appointment
A little preparation goes a long way. Here is what you can do before your visit:
- Complete intake paperwork online through the patient portal, or plan to arrive 15 minutes early to fill it out in the office
- Gather any relevant reports from your pediatrician, school, or other providers
- Write down your concerns and questions so you do not forget anything during the appointment
- Bring your insurance card to your visit
Step 3: The Evaluation
The evaluation typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes and is designed to give us a complete picture of your child's strengths and areas of need.
Your therapist will begin with a parent interview to learn about your concerns, your child's developmental history, and what you are seeing at home. Then your child will participate in a direct assessment through a combination of structured activities and play-based tasks.
Our spaces are warm and welcoming, not sterile or clinical. Children do their best when they feel comfortable, and we work hard to make sure your child feels safe and at ease from the moment they walk in.
Before you leave, your therapist will share their initial observations and answer any immediate questions. You will not leave wondering what comes next.
Step 4: Your Report
Within 5 to 7 business days, you will receive a comprehensive written report that includes:
- A summary of the evaluation findings
- A diagnosis, if applicable
- Clear recommendations for next steps
The report is written in plain, easy-to-understand language. It is designed to be shared with your pediatrician, school, insurance company, or any other providers involved in your child's care.
Step 5: Beginning Therapy
If therapy is recommended, we will help you get started right away. Here is what to expect:
- One-on-one sessions with your child's therapist, typically one to two times per week
- Consistency matters — your child will see the same therapist every session to build trust and rapport
- Clear goals so you always know exactly what we are working on and why
- Regular progress updates to keep you informed every step of the way
We believe that parents are essential partners in therapy. You will always know where your child stands and what you can do at home to support their progress.
What to Bring to Your First Visit
- Your insurance card
- Completed intake paperwork (if not done online)
- Any previous evaluation reports or medical records
- A list of your concerns and questions
- Comfort items for your child, if needed (a favorite toy, blanket, or snack)

We have two convenient locations in the Kansas City area: Lee's Summit, MO and Overland Park, KS. We also offer teletherapy for families in Missouri and Kansas who prefer virtual sessions.
Common Questions
Do I need a referral from my pediatrician?
No referral is needed. You can contact us directly to schedule an evaluation. However, if your pediatrician or another provider has made a referral, please bring any related documentation to your appointment.
How long does the evaluation take?
Most evaluations last 60 to 90 minutes. This gives us enough time for a thorough parent interview, direct assessment, and time to share our initial observations with you before you leave.
Can I stay with my child during the evaluation?
Absolutely. Parents are welcome and encouraged to be present throughout the entire evaluation. Your input is an important part of the process.
What if my child is nervous or uncooperative?
That is completely normal, and our therapists are experienced at putting children at ease. We use play-based activities and follow your child's lead to help them feel comfortable. If your child has a favorite toy or comfort item, feel free to bring it along.
Do you accept insurance?
We accept several major insurance plans. Visit our Insurance and Payment page for details, or call our office and we will help you verify your benefits before your appointment.
How soon can we start therapy after the evaluation?
If therapy is recommended, we typically begin scheduling sessions as soon as the evaluation report is complete, usually within one to two weeks. Our team will work with you to find a schedule that fits your family.
